Nation-wide Safety Network

This initiative outlines ways to helping communities improve their own ability to manage road-safety and Health issues by raising awareness and building Nation-wide capacity with local institutions in the transportation business. ​

The scope of Road Safety Initiative - Uganda is to increase training, awareness and responsible behaviour change to communities based on existing demands and activities at District levels.

Strategy of Road Safety Initiative - Uganda :

In order to build capacity at national and local levels, National capacity building is carried out through workshops and training while local capacity building is carried out through demonstration-projects in selected vulnerable community hot-spots from each region:   ​

  • Central,

  • North,

  • South,

  • East and;

  • West 

Road Safety Initiative - Uganda | ​Objectives 

  • Increase training, awareness and responsible behavior change to all road users.

  • To build capacity of the relevant national and local institution to improve their knowledge of managing risks arising from public roads. 

  • Undertake demonstration-projects in selected districts, training local authorities and institutions to build capacity on how to manage road safety based on the appeal approach. ​​

  • Provide the society with skills to be able to assess risks on public roads and apply it to keep them-selves safe.

  • Raising the need for theory driving to all road-users; and

  • Providing drivers and riders with the information required to comply with traffic laws.​...  

​Objectives | Activities:

  1. Setting up a steering committee for the project;

  2. Developing a detailed project plan of action with specific activities, specific budget, timeline and responsibilities;   ​​

  3. Planning together with the steering committees to ensure that the project criteria and actions proposed lead to improvements in reducing accidents and vulnerability;

  4. Identifying  Government focal point in each of the selected districts to participate in the project;

  5. Assessing each District structures, policies, tools and practices related to Road Safety.

  6. Existing good practices will be the basis for suggestions and recommendations from the participants. 

Implementation phase – Demonstration projects

  1. Identifying, together with the steering committee and government focal point, “hot spots” in each District to demonstrate the project  through the Trans-Appeal implementation; 

  2. Forming in each hot-spot local committees to participate in the demonstration project; ......

Evaluation 

Evaluation is based on the following facts:

 

  • Reduced National staticitics of casualitis as reported by the Traffic Police. 

  • Improve road-safety record at the global staticitics;

  • Reduced Medical burden on the National budget;

  • Increased public awareness of overall risks of road crashes and related prevention measures.
