ROAD SAFETY INITIATIVE - UGANDA

As well as pursuing safety and economic empowerment, regard to current issues characterized by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, the prevention and response to all sorts of epidemics remains a priority. ​

At present, knowing what the risks of HIV/AIDS are and avoiding them is the best protection.

• the training and retraining of volunteers,

• the identification of specific needs,

• the sensitization of people targeted e.g. PLHIV and OVC,

• all sorts of social mobilization activities,

• hygiene and sanitation,

​

• the distribution of Training Manuals, mosquito nets or other health-related kits,

• the spraying of houses,

• the screening and management of cases of malnutrition,

• STI/HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis-related activities,

• The construction of latrines and water wells,

• Home coaching, and income-generating activities.  

• Schools/tertiary institutions and student;   

• counselling services for HIV positive youth,

• orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) suffering from anxiety, grief, trauma;

• Sex workers,

• the youths, vulnerable women,

• female excision practitioners,

• children,

• families with children suffering from genetic diseases,

• refugees,   

• Drivers and the general public.

Fire poses a significant risk to health and safety. It can start suddenly and spread quickly, damaging property and putting lives in danger.  

• Take every reasonable measure to guard against fire outbreaks on their premises.

• Ensure security and safety of persons on the premises in the event of a fire out-break.

• Assessing all buildings for fire safety

• Ensuring there are sufficient fire escape routes 

• Put clear signs for emergency exits in the right place

• Emergency exits should have emergency exit keys, preferably glassed-in in a box, near to the exit but hidden from exterior view

• Designating fire assembly points outside all buildings

   

• Equip buildings, and vehicles with fire extinguishers

• Training staff in the use of fire extinguishers

• Rehearsing an evacuation of the building

• Ensuring all staff know the procedure for calling for help in case of a fire out-break (bear in mind that there may be no fire brigade)

• Store flammable materials correctly, and away from buildings

When on water always wear a life saver jacket. 

Rescuing a drowning person is the last resort and you should do everything possible to avoid getting into a dangerous situation in the first place. 

If you have to make a rescue attempt, think of your own safety first and never put yourself in danger. If the rescue is too dangerous, wait until the emergency services arrive.

Chemical preparations of any sort, whether in the form of medicines or household cleaners should always be treated with caution.

• Consider having a proper lockable cabinet for medicines and chemicals where it is more likely to be supervised     

• Keep medicines in their original containers, clearly labelled

• Do not take other people’s medicine, or let them take yours

• Keep medicines, chemical and cleaning products such as bleach, insect sides and dioxins where children cannot see or reach them

• Chemicals used in the garden, garage or workshop need to be used and stored with great care. Store them in a safe place where children can’t see or reach them

• Keep cosmetics, perfumes and essential oils away from children. 

Many accidents and fatalities involve electricity - it must be treated with respect.

Here are some tips:

• Have your wiring installation checked at least once every five years by an approved contractor, or straightaway if you are buying an older property

• Do not use appliances with worn or damaged flexes. Don’t wire flexes together

• Keep portable mains-operated appliances out of the bathroom

• If an appliance appears faulty stop using it and have it checked at once 

• Never overload an electric socket.
